You’ve for sure heard the term “Social Networking”. It means connecting with people online. This applies to places such as Twitter, Pinterest, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram.

You’ve probably also heard that to do well in business you MUST! be active in some form on social networking.

But does social networking really work?

Even though this is one of the most hyped areas of online marketing today and many are jumping into or already in the arena, few are actually making money from it.

So it doesn’t work?

It actually can work but you have to stay focused. It’s very easy to waste a lot of the day browsing Twitter or Facebook and checking out pretty pictures on Pinterest without getting any real work done.So how do you make Social Network work?
By developing relationships.  And one of the best strategies for this is through blogging. Blogging is a very effective way to stay connected with your potential customers.

How do you make money blogging?

There are 2 rules for making money with your blog. Post often and get involved with other people’s blogs. You can’t expect to get interaction on your blog unless you get entrenched in the blogosphere.î

This connection will help you get to know other bloggers and get your name out there.

Once you give useful answers to peoples questions, you can establish yourself as an authority on the topic you are discussing. This will build their trust in you. They then visit your blog and ultimately buy your products.

And search engines LOVE blogs

Why? Because they are constantly getting updated. Usually a regular website just stays static. Not updated often and information just gets old and sate. But a blog is constantly changing. And I’m not just talking about blog posts. If you have a highly trafficked site that gets a lot of discussion, the comments add to the relevancy as well.

What about Twitter?

No discussion on social marketing can be complete without talking about twitter.

Here are some rules for dealing with Twitter.

Rule #1) Don’t get carried away with it

Rule #2) Try tweeting at least once a day. And follow others in your niche. Many will reciprocate and follow you back.

Rule #3) Link to Twitter from your site

Rule #4) Make sure you aren’t constantly promoting yourself. Space your promotions out.

Rule #5) The key to making money from social marketing is to have a plan and stay focused.

Get More Traffic With Pinterest

I discovered pretty quickly that using Pinterest could garner more traffic for my blog. I was pinning images I had been taking during the day and people were liking, repinning, and visiting. Another friend had a very old post of hers pinned and her site hits were skyrocketing.

To be completely truthful I still haven’t taken full advantage of this due to time constrains but I don’t want you to miss out.  It’s an excellent way to drive people to your website with images.

Pinterest may have started out as a place for women to share product images, but its quick rise in the social network arena makes it a great place for businesses too! Think of it as a place to share your ideas and tips in a visual way and be creative about how you can profit from that.

Users on Pinterest love to share and repin images from a whole range of categories. And as with any social network you just need to find a balance between self-promotion, social networking, and making money.

Here are just a few ways you can use Pinterest in your business.

Promote Your Blog

If you have an image on your blog, it is pinnable. I was once told to add an image to every blog post as part of my daily online work. After several years of blogging it’s going to take a while to go back and take care of that little omission but it’s worth it. You should always try to add an image on each of your blog posts and a “Pin it” button somewhere nearby. Also your readers are drawn to images and if you have an interesting one it encourages them to go on and read the rest of your article.

Pinning creates a direct link back to your blog. This can bring a whole new stream of traffic to your site. Create themed boards on Pinterest that are based on the categories on your website, and be sure that you always pin your own blog post images to those boards.

5 Tips to Finding a Good WordPress Theme

blog-theme-choosingWordPress is a great foundation for building a blog or even website. There are so many WordPress themes out there with all the  graphics, colors, widgets and plug-ins that it can be very difficult to find the right theme for your site? How will you know if you found the right one for you? Here are 5 tips to help you find that perfect WordPress theme that you don’t feel the need to change every six months.

So what should you look for ?

Here are a few tips to help you find a great WordPress theme.

Go Visiting

  • 1 - I think the first thing when looking for a good WordPress theme is to take a gander at the blogs you visit. I’m sure many of the pretty themes have caught your eye. Look at the different features that make it a theme you like.  Are the widgets in the sidebar something you would like too? How about the header? The interactive features. Can you easily navigate around the page? Take notes. Take a glance  at the bottom of the blog or in the sidebar as this is usually where you’ll see the credits and even a link to who created or designed the blog.

Find a Freebie

  • 2 - Once you find a designer or WordPress developer you seem to  like the look of visit their websites. Often they will offer free themes or custom themes as part of their services. These free themes usually have the basics of their site designs. Even though it won’t have all the bells and whistles it may have some of the ones to let you know if the theme design will work for you. Visit their website and explore what they have to offer. You may be able to test drive a theme.

Safety first

  • 3 - Okay maybe this should go before the previous tip but hopefully you’re reading this before running out to get your theme. Make sure the theme you choose is safe. This is so important. I didn’t realize this in the beginning when working with my websites. While there are many great WordPress themes there are also some shady characters. What constitutes an unsafe theme? Sometimes they put malware in the theme code. Links to questionable sites and the like. While there are a lot of WordPress free themes out there. Don’t download any old theme ! WordPress.org offers a directory of themes which have been inspected and approved. You can find these themes here . Or get your themes from a reputable company such as StudioPress.

Test, test, test

  • 4 - Test the WordPress theme you finally choose. How can you do this? If you’re savvy you can re-create a duplicate of your site that is password protected and test away. This might be a little much for some so happily there is a little plugin, Theme Test Drive,  in the WordPress repository that will help you out. View your theme in various browsers, and explore options for customization.

Check it Out

  • 5 - How many people have downloaded the theme you chose? Some themes have statistics telling you how many people are using or have downloaded the same theme. Can you customize the theme? One of the nice things about the WordPress theme directory is they do provide this data and they provide a link to the developerís website for more theme options from a reputable developer.

A good WordPress theme is worth the effort it takes to find it. Make notes of what you want and like, including colors, graphics, and layout. Spend time investigating the themes you like, before downloading them, to make sure they’ll provide the features you need to best serve your business and your customers.

We use and enjoy StudioPress here at Biztipsformom and our other sites.
