Your Online Store and Getting Traffic

Do you have an online boutique for some fabulous (fill-in the blank) product but seem to be getting nowhere in the traffic department?


Well let’s look at a few things.

First of all put yourself in the shopper’s shoes. When you go looking for an item to buy online and somehow you land on a site you have never heard of. What keeps you there? A page filled with endless items, a page detailing all about the business but with no pictures and seemingly no idea of the product you were looking for,  a page with a select few items and well..aha! just the item you were looking for.

Second is your store all over the map or do you focus on a few things that you do well? You are not Target, or Macy’s. You can only do so much so do a little and do it well. Focus on a few items or even one that you know well. If you have a boutique hopefully it centers around one kind of product such as kids clothing or cooking gear.

Next yes words get you the traffic but don’t stuff you meta tags with words you know will get you traffic and then don’t deliver on the product. Only list in your meta tags what is on your page. There are other opportunities to get that word out there and I will list them along with tips below.

Some More Tips

  1. As nice as it is to see those high numbers when people come to your site if they are leaving without buying anything then it may be time to focus. Why did they come to your site? Do you sell what they were looking for? Can they find it and buy it easily?
  2. People can search and land anywhere on your site. Think of each of the pages on your site as an entry point to the rest of your site and edit them as if they were a front page.
  3. Pictures do sell. If you are selling products and are not an informational site then have good photos of what you are selling. A few views such as front and side and even back are good.
  4. Use your meta tags in your header. Don’t stuff them with words and phrases that do not relate to what is on the page but put descriptions and keywords to let searchers know they have found what they are looking for.
